Principle

Norman's gulfs of execution and evaluation

People report that turning a simple intent like "allow this show, limit chat" into settings means digging through buried menus split across services and devices, and that afterwards they cannot easily tell what is actually restricted, so they recheck constantly, see controls fail open or block allowed apps, or give up.

A fix

Offer one guided setup, prompted when a child account or device is created, that starts from age-based presets and lets parents allow or block individual apps, titles, and features like chat. Pair it with a single per-child summary that shows what is currently allowed or blocked, flags newly installed unrestricted apps and settings that have reverted, and explains why a specific app was blocked.

Grouping, principle and fix drafted with Claude and reviewed by Justusability. Counts are people whose comment Claude labelled a usability complaint about this issue; see Method for how, and its limits. Something wrong here?
