Principle

Response time limits, and visibility of system status

People report search that takes many seconds, rescans instead of using its index, returns oddly ranked results and restarts when the sort order changes, with no sign of what it is doing. Past a few seconds people stop waiting, and stop trusting it.

A fix

Show instant results from the index first and stream slower filesystem matches in later, with a visible indicator of what is still being searched. Re-sort results already found instead of restarting, and add typo-tolerant matching for file names.
