the notion of the OS taking tens of minutes to self update when all I wanted was to quickly reboot it is unbearable

Windows updates are mostly unpopular because they have a tendency to happen when you are in the middle of something else which is incredibly annoying.

No longer is that an option, your workflow will simply be interrupted by automatic updates.

Principle
User control and freedom
People report that updates reboot the machine mid-task or overnight against their choices, ending long-running jobs and losing open work.
A fix
Never reboot while an app reports unsaved work or a running job, or while the user is active. Let users set a schedule or postpone indefinitely for non-critical updates, and make sure update settings are never silently reset.
