Principle

User control and freedom (Nielsen); clearly marked exit

People report that leaving Prime means passing several confirmation screens, pause and alternative offers, confusing wording and sometimes extra steps they didn't know about, so they lack the clearly marked exit the heuristic calls for and some believed they had cancelled when they had not.

A fix

Make cancellation as short as sign-up: one clearly labelled 'Cancel Prime' link in account settings, at most one optional offer screen with an equally prominent 'Continue cancelling' button, and plain-language buttons that say exactly what each choice does. End with an unmistakable confirmation page and email stating the end date and that no further charges will be made, and show the membership status (active, cancelled, trial ending) on the account page.
