Principle

Response time limits (Nielsen's 0.1/1/10 seconds)

People report that Gmail, especially since the redesign, takes long to load and feels sluggish to respond, and that scrolling can jump back to the top. This pushes routine reading and writing past the delays where users stay in flow, and some say they consider leaving.

A fix

Set and enforce performance budgets for first load and common actions (open message, compose, scroll), and render the inbox list before secondary panels and add-ons load. Keep a working lightweight mode that the Basic HTML link actually switches to, and preserve scroll position on mobile browsers.
